Problem

Three solid cubes, each with a volume of 1.0 m31.0\,\text{m}^3, are made respectively of pine wood (density 600 kg m−3600\,\text{kg m}^{-3}), water (density 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg m}^{-3}), and iron (density 7800 kg m−37800\,\text{kg m}^{-3}). (i) Calculate the mass of each cube. (ii) Arrange the cubes in descending order of their inertia and justify your answer. (iii) A horizontal force of 120 N is applied separately to each cube resting on a friction-free surface. Compare the accelerations produced and show how the results illustrate the relationship between mass and inertia. (iv) Explain how your observations are consistent with Newton’s First Law of Motion.
