Problem

A laboratory apparatus shoots a proton straight into a region of uniform magnetic field. The velocity of the proton is perpendicular to the magnetic field. The magnetic field strength is 25 mT, and instruments measure a magnetic force of 4.0×10−14 N4.0\times10^{-14}\,\text{N} acting on the proton. (a) Calculate the speed of the proton. (b) An electron enters the same magnetic field with the same speed and in the same geometric orientation as the proton. Determine the magnitude of the magnetic force acting on the electron, and comment on whether the force is greater than, less than, or equal to the force on the proton.
