Problem
A 2.0kg block is released from rest at the top of a smooth incline of height 1.5m relative to the horizontal base. At the bottom of the incline the block moves onto a short, smooth horizontal section that ends in a light spring of force constant 800Nm−1 fixed to a rigid wall. Neglect the mass of the spring and air resistance.
(i) Calculate the speed of the block just before it makes contact with the spring.
(ii) Determine the maximum compression of the spring.
(iii) After rebounding from the fully compressed spring, the block retraces its path up the incline. Find the height above the base to which it rises before momentarily coming to rest.
