Problem

Two identical strings (same material and length) are stretched horizontally. String A is kept under a tension of 35 N35\,\text{N}. The tension in string B is increased until the wave speed on B is exactly twice the wave speed on A. (a) Calculate the tension required in string B. (b) Starting again with both strings at 35 N35\,\text{N}, the tension on each string is then doubled while their linear densities remain unchanged. Determine the percentage change in wave speed produced by this adjustment. (c) Instead, suppose the tension on a single string is quadrupled at the same time its linear density is doubled (for example, by attaching extra mass uniformly along its length). Calculate the new wave speed as a percentage of the original wave speed.
