Problem

Two identical clay balls, each of mass mm, approach a vertical wall with speed vv along the same straight line and collide normally with the wall. Ball A sticks to the wall, while ball B rebounds along the same line with the same speed vv it had before impact. Assume the duration of contact with the wall is the same for both balls. (a) For ball A, determine the magnitude and direction of the impulse delivered by the wall. (b) For ball B, determine the magnitude and direction of the impulse delivered by the wall. (c) Compare the change in kinetic energy experienced by the two balls during their respective collisions. (d) If the average force exerted by the wall is defined as impulse divided by contact time, state which ball experiences the larger average force and give a brief reason.
