Problem

Let fa(x)=x2−4ax+4a2−1,f_a(x)=\sqrt{x^{2}-4ax+4a^{2}-1}, where aa is a real parameter. (i) For a fixed aa, write the condition on the quadratic expression inside the square root that guarantees real values of fa(x)f_a(x). (ii) Using the result of part (i), determine all real values of aa for which the domain of faf_a is non-empty. (iii) For each value (or range) of aa obtained in part (ii), describe the corresponding domain of faf_a.
