Problem

Two objects of masses m1m_1 and m2m_2 move in the same straight line with velocities v1v_1 and v2v_2 respectively. (i) Starting from the definition of momentum, derive the mathematical condition that must be satisfied for the two objects to have equal momenta. (ii) If instead the two objects possess equal kinetic energies, prove that the ratio of their momenta is m1m2\sqrt{\dfrac{m_1}{m_2}}. (iii) A cricket ball of mass 0.16 kg0.16\,\text{kg} and a tennis ball of mass 0.06 kg0.06\,\text{kg} are struck so that they have equal kinetic energies. Calculate the ratio of their momenta. (iv) Comment on how mass influences momentum when kinetic energy is kept the same, using your result from part (iii).
