Problem

A 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} block is attached to a horizontal spring of spring constant k=200 N m−1k=200\,\text{N}\,\text{m}^{-1}. The surface is smooth. (a) Calculate the magnitude and sign of the restoring force when the block is at (i) x=+0.030 mx=+0.030\,\text{m} and (ii) x=−0.060 mx=-0.060\,\text{m}. (b) Determine the magnitude and direction of the acceleration of the block at each of the two positions in part (a). (c) Compare the magnitudes of the restoring forces and accelerations obtained for the two displacements and comment on the result.
