A stretched string of length L is fixed rigidly at both ends. A stationary (standing) wave is established on it.
(i) Define the terms node and antinode as used in the context of stationary waves on a string.
(ii) Explain, with suitable reasoning, why the distance between any two successive nodes is equal to one–half of the wavelength of the constituent progressive waves.
(iii) State how the distribution of nodes and antinodes would differ if one end of the same string were kept free instead of fixed.
