Problem

Two successive harmonics of a stretched string under an initial tension T1=90 NT_1=90\,\text{N} are observed to have frequencies 240 Hz240\,\text{Hz} and 280 Hz280\,\text{Hz}. The length of the vibrating segment is 0.90 m0.90\,\text{m}. (a) Show that the fundamental frequency of the string is 40 Hz40\,\text{Hz}. (b) Using the above data, determine the linear mass density of the string. (c) The string is replaced by another wire of the same length whose linear mass density is 1.51.5 times the value obtained in part (b). The tension is adjusted so that the frequency of the second harmonic of the new wire equals the frequency of the fifth harmonic of the original wire. Calculate the new tension that must be applied.
