Problem

Two independent gaseous reactions are carried out in separate flasks at 298 K. ΔG°298 (kJ mol⁻¹) Ea (kJ mol⁻¹) Reaction A 2 NO2(g) → N2O4(g) −5.8 48 Reaction B CO(g) + ½ O2(g) → CO2(g) −257 212 (a) Identify which reaction is more thermodynamically favorable at 298 K, citing numerical evidence. (b) Identify which reaction is expected to have the larger rate constant at 298 K. Justify your answer without performing a full Arrhenius calculation. (c) Both flasks are allowed to react for one hour at 298 K. Predict the macroscopic observations you would expect for each flask and explain your reasoning. (d) If the temperature of both flasks were raised to 500 K while maintaining all other conditions, state qualitatively how your answer to part (b) might change, and explain why.
