Problem

An electron is projected with a speed of 2.5×106 m s−12.5\times10^{6}\,\text{m s}^{-1} along the positive xx-axis into a region where a uniform magnetic field of magnitude B=3.0×10−2 TB = 3.0\times10^{-2}\,\text{T} exists along the positive zz-axis. (i) Determine the magnitude and direction of a uniform electric field that must be applied so that the electron continues to move undeflected in a straight line. (ii) If instead the electric field found in part (i) is applied in the opposite direction, describe qualitatively the initial curvature (if any) of the electron’s path and justify your answer.
