Problem

During a hydrographic survey an echo sounder on a stationary platform registers the sea-bed echo after a time delay of 3.0 s3.0\,\text{s}. (a) If the water temperature at the site is 25∘C25^\circ\text{C}, the speed of sound may be taken as 1510 m s−11510\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. Calculate the actual depth of the water. (b) The operator mistakenly assumes the speed of sound to be 1440 m s−11440\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} (a value appropriate to 5∘C5^\circ\text{C}). Compute the percentage error introduced in the depth reading due to this wrong assumption.
