Problem
Sulfur dioxide, SO2, is an atmospheric pollutant released during volcanic eruptions and some industrial processes. Suppose that an air-sampling experiment captures exactly 1.80×1024 SO2 molecules. The constant NA=6.022×1023mol−1 is provided for reference.
(a) Calculate the amount of SO2 (in moles) present in the sample.
(b) Determine the mass of this quantity of SO2 in grams, using appropriate significant figures.
(c) Express the mass calculated in part (b) in kilograms and comment on whether this amount would be readily detectable by a laboratory balance with a readability of 0.001kg. Justify your answer briefly.
