Problem

Light travels with a speed of 2.25 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹ in a liquid X. The speed of light in vacuum may be taken as 3.00 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹. A ray originating in liquid X is incident on the plane surface of another medium Y whose refractive index is 1.62 at an angle of 45°. Answer the following questions. (i) Calculate the refractive index of liquid X. (ii) Determine the angle of refraction in medium Y. (iii) Based on your calculations, state which of the two media, X or Y, is optically denser and give a brief reason.
