Problem

A hollow spherical shell is made of copper. Its external diameter is 18 cm. The shell is required to weigh 2.5 kg2.5\,\text{kg}. The density of copper is 8.8 g/cm38.8\,\text{g/cm}^3. (i) Find the thickness of the shell, correct to the nearest millimetre. (ii) Calculate the total surface area of copper exposed (outer and inner surfaces) correct to the nearest square centimetre.
