Problem

A car moves along a straight road such that its velocity is +12 m s−1+12\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} for 8 s8\,\text{s} and then −8 m s−1-8\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} for the next 5 s5\,\text{s}. Taking the starting point as origin and east as the positive direction, find: (i) the displacement of the car at the end of 13 s13\,\text{s}, (ii) the average velocity for the whole 13 s13\,\text{s} interval.
