Problem
The 1st, 3rd and 5th terms of a sequence are 3, 12 and 48 respectively.
(i) If the sequence is assumed to be an arithmetic progression, find its common difference and first term. Verify whether the given data support this assumption.
(ii) If the sequence is assumed to be a geometric progression, find its common ratio and first term. Verify whether the given data support this assumption.
(iii) Decide which of the two assumptions in parts (i) and (ii) is correct, giving reasons.
(iv) For the correct progression, obtain a general expression for the nth term and find the least integer n for which the nth term exceeds 10000.
