Problem
A rider wearing a motorcycle helmet falls vertically so that the helmeted head of mass 5.0 kg strikes the ground with a speed of 5.0 m s−1 and comes to rest without rebounding.
Two different liner materials are being tested:
Material A (foam): head stops in 6.0 ms.
Material B (gel): head stops in 15 ms.
(i) For material A, calculate the average force exerted on the head during the impact.
(ii) Repeat the calculation for material B.
(iii) Obtain the ratio of the average forces produced by materials A and B.
(iv) Medical studies suggest that an average impact force above 6000 N can cause serious brain injury. Using your results, evaluate which liner material offers better protection and justify your answer.
