Problem

A train leaves station A and travels 30 km30\,\text{km} due west to station B in 24 min24\,\text{min}. It then reverses direction and travels 18 km18\,\text{km} due east back towards station A in 16 min16\,\text{min}. Finally, it continues a further 6 km6\,\text{km} due east to station C in 8 min8\,\text{min}. (a) Convert each given time to seconds and note the total time for the whole journey. (b) Calculate the total distance travelled by the train. (c) Determine the net displacement of the train from station A to station C and state its direction. (d) Calculate the average speed for the complete journey. (e) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the average velocity for the complete journey. (f) By what percentage is the average speed greater than the magnitude of the average velocity?
