Problem

Two parallel cliffs are 660 m660\,\text{m} apart. A gun is fired at a point somewhere between them. The first echo is heard 1.5 s1.5\,\text{s} after the shot and the second echo is heard 2.5 s2.5\,\text{s} after the shot. Taking the speed of sound in air as 330 m s−1330\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}, show which cliff is nearer to the firing point and find the distances of the firing point from each cliff.
