Problem

A cricket ball of mass 0.16 kg0.16\,\text{kg} is moving horizontally towards a fielder at 20 m s−120\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. The fielder brings the ball to rest by applying a constant force. (i) Define linear momentum and state its SI unit. (ii) Calculate the change in momentum of the ball during the catch. (iii) If the ball is stopped in 0.020 s0.020\,\text{s}, find the magnitude and direction of the average force exerted by the fielder on the ball. (iv) The fielder wears special gloves that increase the stopping time to 0.040 s0.040\,\text{s}. Determine the new value of the average force and compare it with the result obtained in part (iii).
