Problem

Light travelling in water (refractive index 1.33) is incident on a flat glass surface (refractive index 1.52). For a certain angle of incidence in water, the reflected light is found to be completely plane-polarised. (i) Derive a general relation between the refractive indices of two media and the angle of incidence in the first medium for which the reflected light is completely plane-polarised. (ii) Using the relation obtained in part (i), calculate the required angle of incidence in water at the water–glass boundary. (iii) For this incidence, determine the angle between the reflected and the refracted rays.
