Problem

An angle φ\varphi satisfies sin⁡φ=−1213\displaystyle \sin \varphi = -\dfrac{12}{13}. (i) State the possible quadrants in which φ\varphi can lie, giving reasons based on the signs of the trigonometric ratios. (ii) Explain how the sign of cos⁡φ\cos \varphi is fixed when it is additionally known that π<φ<3π2\pi < \varphi < \dfrac{3\pi}{2}. Briefly justify your answer with reference to quadrant signs. (iii) Using the information above, calculate cos⁡φ\cos \varphi and tan⁡φ\tan \varphi. (iv) Verify that sin⁡2 ⁣φ+cos⁡2 ⁣φ=1\sin^{2}\!\varphi + \cos^{2}\!\varphi = 1 for the values obtained.
