Problem

An athletics coach traces the path of a runner along a straight practice track. The starting line is chosen as the origin OO. The runner begins 50 m50\,\text{m} east of OO, runs 120 m120\,\text{m} west to point AA, immediately turns and runs 180 m180\,\text{m} east to point BB, and finally runs 30 m30\,\text{m} west to finish at point CC. (a) Calculate the position of the runner relative to OO after reaching each point AA, BB, and CC. (b) Find the total distance covered from the start to point CC. (c) Determine the net displacement of the runner from OO to point CC, stating both magnitude and direction. (d) Show, using your answers to parts (b) and (c), that the magnitude of displacement is less than or equal to the distance travelled for this journey.
