Problem

A sample of atomic hydrogen is irradiated so that each atom has its single electron promoted to the fourth energy level (n=4n=4). The atoms then relax to lower levels, emitting radiation. (i) Calculate the maximum number of different spectral lines that can be produced as the electrons return to the ground state. (ii) Out of the lines obtained in part (i), determine how many belong to the Lyman series. (iii) How many of the remaining lines fall in the Balmer series?
