Problem
A laboratory log book records the extension produced in a light spring when different pulling forces are applied. When the spring is just turned taut, the extension is zero. A force of 4N produces an extension of 0.05m, and a force of 8N produces an extension of 0.10m. The points (0,0), (0.05,4) and (0.10,8), if joined, form a straight line on a force–extension graph.
Answer the following questions based on this information.
(i) Explain what physical quantity is represented by the slope of the straight line that passes through the plotted points.
(ii) If the spring is further stretched to an extension of 0.12m along the same straight line, describe in words how you would use the graph to estimate the work done in reaching this extension.
(iii) The actual work done in stretching the spring from 0 to 0.12m is required. Without calculating exact numerical values, state the geometrical shape whose area must be found on the graph and justify your choice.
