Problem

A hockey puck of mass 250 g250\,\text{g} is struck so that it slides over ice with speed 18 m s−118\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. Answer the following: (a) Convert the mass of the puck into SI units. (b) Calculate the magnitude of its linear momentum. (c) A safety device on the rink boards is designed to activate only if the magnitude of the puck’s momentum exceeds 5 kg m s−15\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. Will the device activate when this puck hits the boards? Give a reason for your answer.
