Problem

A spring obeys the non-linear relation F=−kx−bx2F=-kx-bx^{2}, where kk and bb are positive constants. For two small displacements x1x_{1} and x2x_{2} applied separately, the corresponding restoring forces are F1F_{1} and F2F_{2}. Show, by comparing the force when the displacement is (x1+x2)(x_{1}+x_{2}), that the principle of superposition is not valid for this spring.
