Problem

A rocket of mass 2.0×103 kg2.0\times10^{3}\,\text{kg} is launched vertically upward. Its engines exert an upward thrust force of 3.2×104 N3.2\times10^{4}\,\text{N}. Neglect air resistance. (a) Determine the magnitude and direction of the rocket’s acceleration at the instant of launch. (b) If the thrust were reduced to 2.0×104 N2.0\times10^{4}\,\text{N} while the mass remains the same, would the rocket accelerate upward, downward, or remain at rest? Briefly justify your answer.
