Problem

Two strings made of the same material have lengths L1L_1 and L2L_2 and are fixed at both ends. The linear mass densities of the strings are identical. The first string is kept under tension T1T_1 and the second under tension T2T_2. Both strings are observed to have the same fundamental frequency. (i) Derive an expression for the ratio T1T2\dfrac{T_1}{T_2} in terms of L1L_1 and L2L_2. (ii) If L1=0.80 mL_1 = 0.80\,\text{m}, L2=1.00 mL_2 = 1.00\,\text{m} and T1=64 NT_1 = 64\,\text{N}, determine the value of T2T_2. (iii) Comment briefly on whether your result in part (ii) would change if the strings had different linear mass densities but were still made of the same material.
