Problem
Two identical uniform solid cylinders, each of mass 1.2kg and radius 0.15m, are mounted coaxially on the same frictionless horizontal shaft. Cylinder A is spinning clockwise at 8.0rad/s; cylinder B is initially at rest. A thin layer of adhesive is suddenly injected between the cylinders so that after a short time they rotate together without slipping.
(a) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the angular speed of the combined cylinders immediately after they couple.
(b) Determine the ratio of the final rotational kinetic energy to the initial rotational kinetic energy of the system.
(c) State whether mechanical energy is conserved in this process and support your answer with evidence from your calculations.
