Problem
A student places two identical bar magnets in a straight line such that the south pole of magnet A faces the north pole of magnet B with a gap of 2 cm between them.
(i) Draw a clear, labelled diagram of the magnetic field lines for this arrangement.
(ii) Using your diagram, compare the magnetic field strengths at point X (mid-point of the 2 cm gap) and at point Y which is on the axis of magnet B, 5 cm away from its north pole. Base your answer on the relative density of field lines at the two points.
(iii) State, giving reasons, whether a small iron filing placed at point X will experience a stronger or weaker force of attraction compared to point Y.
(iv) How will your answers to parts (ii) and (iii) change if the two magnets are brought into contact so that the gap becomes zero? Explain briefly.
