Problem

Two organ pipes A and B are of equal length. Pipe A is open at both ends, whereas pipe B is closed at one end. (i) Pipe A, vibrating in its fundamental mode, produces a note of 300 Hz300\,\text{Hz}. Taking the speed of sound in air to be 330 m s−1330\,\text{m s}^{-1}, determine the length of each pipe. (ii) Calculate the frequency of the first overtone produced by pipe A. (iii) Calculate the frequency of the first overtone produced by pipe B. (iv) If these two overtones are sounded together, what beat frequency will be heard?
