Problem
A monochromatic beam of light of frequency ν(>ν0) is incident on a photoelectric cell. The collector is kept at a small negative potential −V with respect to the emitter so that a retarding field exists.
(i) Explain why the photocurrent does not fall to zero immediately when a small negative potential is applied.
(ii) Describe qualitatively how the graph of photocurrent versus collector potential changes when:
(1) the frequency of the incident light is doubled while intensity remains the same, and
(2) the intensity of the incident light is doubled while frequency remains the same.
(iii) Justify, with reasoned arguments, whether the stopping potential for the metal depends on the intensity of incident light.
