Problem

Two forces F1\mathbf{F}_1 and F2\mathbf{F}_2 of magnitudes 12 N12\,\text{N} and 17 N17\,\text{N} act at a point making an angle of 50∘50^{\circ} with each other. (i) On a sheet of graph paper, represent the two forces to a suitable scale as adjacent sides of a parallelogram. Draw the diagonal to obtain the resultant force and measure its magnitude and the angle it makes with F1\mathbf{F}_1. (ii) Resolve F1\mathbf{F}_1 and F2\mathbf{F}_2 into perpendicular components along the same pair of axes and compute the magnitude and direction of the resultant force analytically. (iii) Compare the results of parts (i) and (ii). Explain why any discrepancy might arise.
