Problem

A ship leaves harbour OO and sails 12 km12\,\text{km} due north to point PP, then 9 km9\,\text{km} due west to point QQ. From QQ it wishes to reach a station SS that is located directly 15 km15\,\text{km} due east of OO. (i) Represent the three known displacements OP→\overrightarrow{OP}, PQ→\overrightarrow{PQ} and OS→\overrightarrow{OS} in vector form, taking east as the positive xx-axis and north as the positive yy-axis. (ii) By drawing the first two displacements to scale, determine graphically the single displacement QS→\overrightarrow{QS} that the ship must undertake from QQ to arrive at SS. State its magnitude and direction correct to the nearest tenth of a kilometre and to the nearest degree. (iii) Verify your graphical answer in part (ii) by analytical computation using vector components. (iv) Find the total distance travelled by the ship and its net displacement from OO to SS. Comment briefly on the difference between the two quantities.
