Problem

A stretched string is fixed rigidly at one end and free to move transversely at the other end. A sinusoidal transverse disturbance is sent along the string towards the ends. (i) Explain qualitatively how the reflected wave differs in phase at the two ends. (ii) Using suitable boundary arguments, describe how the displacement and the slope of the string behave at each end immediately after reflection. (iii) Sketch, on the same diagram, one complete wavelength of the incident and reflected waves at the instant they have just begun to overlap near each end. (iv) On the basis of your explanation, identify which end behaves as a node and which behaves as an antinode when a stationary pattern is finally established.
