Problem

A 2.0 kg2.0\,\text{kg} steel ball rolls at 3.0 m ⁣⋅ ⁣s−13.0\,\text{m}\!\cdot\!\text{s}^{-1} along a horizontal track and collides elastically with a 1.0 kg1.0\,\text{kg} brass ball that is initially at rest on the same track. After the collision both balls continue to move along the track. (a) Determine the speed and direction of the steel ball immediately after the collision. (b) Determine the speed and direction of the brass ball immediately after the collision. (c) Compute the ratio of the total kinetic energy after the collision to the total kinetic energy before the collision, and state how this result is consistent with the type of collision specified.
