Problem

A string of length LL is tightly stretched between two rigid supports. During an experiment it is observed that, besides the fixed ends, there are exactly two additional points along the string that never move. (i) Define the terms node and antinode for a standing wave on a stretched string. (ii) Identify the harmonic that is being produced on the string. Give a clear reason by referring to the observed stationary points. (iii) Draw a neat labelled sketch of the standing‐wave pattern for this mode and mark all nodes (NN) and antinodes (AA). (iv) Explain, with general reasoning, the relationship between the harmonic number nn and the total number of nodes present on a string fixed at both ends.
