Problem
(a) A student claims that in a series RLC circuit with XL>XC, the phasor representing the inductive voltage VL should be drawn downward, while the capacitive voltage VC should be drawn upward with respect to the reference axis of the current. He also places the resultant supply voltage V exactly along the positive x–axis.
(i) Identify any two conceptual errors present in the student’s description of the phasor diagram.
(ii) Redraw a qualitatively correct phasor diagram for the same circuit, clearly showing the directions of VR, VL, VC, the resultant voltage V, and the phase angle ϕ between V and I.
(iii) Explain, with reasons, how your corrected diagram satisfies Kirchhoff’s voltage law in phasor form.
