Problem

A rubber ball of mass 0.20 kg0.20\,\text{kg} collides with a horizontal floor. The floor imparts an upward impulse of 2.8 N s2.8\,\text{N\,s} to the ball. Immediately after leaving contact with the floor, the ball moves upward with a speed of 5.0 m s−15.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. Neglect air resistance. (i) Determine the speed of the ball just before it struck the floor. (ii) Using your result from part (i), calculate the maximum height above the floor to which the ball will rise after the rebound. (iii) Find the loss of mechanical energy of the ball–Earth system during the collision.
