Problem
A physics student measures the acceleration due to gravity by the simple-pendulum method and analyses the experimental errors.
(i) Starting from the relation between time period, length and acceleration due to gravity, obtain an expression for the fractional error in the calculated value of g in terms of the fractional errors in length and time period.
(ii) The length of the pendulum is measured as 1.000 m with a possible error of ±0.002 m. The time for 50 oscillations is recorded as 100.0 s with a possible reaction-time error of ±0.1 s. Determine (a) the percentage error in length, (b) the percentage error in time period, and (c) the percentage error in g.
