Problem

Three arbitrary vectors A⃗ (A,α)\vec A\,(A,\alpha), B⃗ (B,β)\vec B\,(B,\beta) and C⃗ (C,γ)\vec C\,(C,\gamma) act in the same plane, where the bracketed symbols denote magnitude and the angle each vector makes with the positive xx–axis. Answer the following: (i) Write the expressions for the rectangular components Ax, AyA_x,\,A_y, Bx, ByB_x,\,B_y and Cx, CyC_x,\,C_y in terms of the given magnitudes and angles. (ii) Hence obtain expressions for the rectangular components RxR_x and RyR_y of the resultant vector R⃗=A⃗+B⃗+C⃗\vec R=\vec A+\vec B+\vec C. (iii) Using the results of part (ii), derive general formulae for the magnitude RR and the direction θ\theta of R⃗\vec R with respect to the positive xx–axis. (iv) Explain why the relations obtained in parts (ii) and (iii) remain valid for the sum of any number of coplanar vectors expressed in rectangular components.
