Problem

A runner starts from point AA on a semicircular track of radius 14 m14\,\text{m}, runs along the curved path to point BB (the diametrically opposite end), and then continues straight along the diameter from BB to the centre OO of the circle. (i) Calculate the total distance covered by the runner. (ii) Determine the magnitude of the displacement of the runner from point AA to point OO. (iii) If the entire motion takes 50 s50\,\text{s}, compute the average speed and the magnitude of the average velocity. (iv) Which of the two averages obtained in part (iii) is larger? Explain briefly why this is so for the given path.
