A coin rests at the bottom of a transparent bowl filled with a liquid. To an observer looking vertically downward, the coin appears to be 4.0 cm below the liquid surface, whereas its real depth is 6.0 cm.
Answer the following.
(i) Define the refractive index of the liquid in terms of real and apparent depths.
(ii) Calculate the refractive index of the liquid.
(iii) Using a suitable ray diagram, explain why the coin appears raised to the observer.
(iv) If the observer’s eye is moved closer to the liquid surface while still viewing vertically downward, will the apparent depth of the coin change? Give reason for your answer.
