Problem

Consider a geometric progression (G.P.) in which two of its terms are known. (i) State the general expression for the nnth term of a G.P. whose first term is aa and common ratio is rr. (ii) If the ppth term is TpT_p and the qqth term is TqT_q, prove that TqTp=r q−p\dfrac{T_q}{T_p}=r^{\,q-p}. (iii) Using the result of part (ii), explain how the values of aa and rr can be uniquely determined when Tp, TqT_p,\,T_q and the positions p, qp,\,q are given with p≠qp\neq q.
