Problem

The velocity of a 0.20 kg0.20\,\text{kg} mass attached to an ideal spring varies with time as described below: • v=0v = 0 at t=0 st = 0\,\text{s}, • v=+20 cm s−1v = +20\,\text{cm\,s}^{-1} at t=0.20 st = 0.20\,\text{s}, • v=0v = 0 at t=0.40 st = 0.40\,\text{s}, • v=−20 cm s−1v = -20\,\text{cm\,s}^{-1} at t=0.60 st = 0.60\,\text{s}, • v=0v = 0 at t=0.80 st = 0.80\,\text{s}, with the pattern repeating thereafter. The motion is simple harmonic. (i) Determine the time period of the oscillation. (ii) Calculate the amplitude of the motion. (iii) Using the information above, find the displacement of the mass at t=0.15 st = 0.15\,\text{s}. (iv) Compute the potential energy of the system at t=0.15 st = 0.15\,\text{s}.
