Problem

A puck of mass 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} slides along a smooth horizontal surface and is acted upon by a time-dependent force along the xx-axis described below: • 0≤t≤0.02 s0 \le t \le 0.02\,\text{s}: the force rises linearly from 00 to 100 N100\,\text{N}. • 0.02 s<t≤0.04 s0.02\,\text{s} < t \le 0.04\,\text{s}: the force decreases linearly to −50 N-50\,\text{N}. • 0.04 s<t≤0.06 s0.04\,\text{s} < t \le 0.06\,\text{s}: the force remains constant at −50 N-50\,\text{N}. For t>0.06 st > 0.06\,\text{s}, the force is zero. (i) Sketch a qualitative force–time graph for 0≤t≤0.06 s0 \le t \le 0.06\,\text{s} based on the above description. (ii) Calculate the total impulse delivered to the puck in this interval. (iii) The puck was initially moving with a speed of 4 m s−14\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} in the +x+x direction at t=0t = 0. Determine its velocity (magnitude and direction) at t=0.06 st = 0.06\,\text{s}.
