Problem

A particle executes SHM along a straight line with amplitude AA. Consider three instants when its displacements from the equilibrium position are x=0x=0 (point PP), x=A2x=\tfrac{A}{2} (point QQ) and x=Ax=A (point RR). Answer the following: (i) Explain qualitatively how the kinetic energy and potential energy of the particle vary with displacement during its motion. (ii) Arrange the points PP, QQ and RR in ascending order of kinetic energy. Justify your answer. (iii) Which of the three points has the greatest total mechanical energy? Give reasons for your choice.
